| Breaking News | | Saturday, June 2nd, 2001: San Francisco, Veteran Elvira Sign Deal Happy times in San Francisco as the Giants and star starting pitcher Narciso Elvira put the finishing touches on a $73,760,000 contract extension that will keep the 33-year-old in town 4 years longer.
The signing is great news for San Francisco because players of this caliber are hard to come by.
This year Elvira has a 1-2 mark in 6 starts with a 4.91 ERA. He has given up 34 hits in 29.1 innings, struck out 24 and issued 16 walks. Opposing clubs have compiled a .291 batting average against him. | | Thursday, May 3rd, 2001: Giants C Barrett Suspended 2 Games San Francisco catcher Michael Barrett was ejected in the game between the Giants and Cardinals for letting loose a profanity-laced tirade against the home plate umpire after some calls didn't go the way he wanted. Barrett was incensed in the loss to St. Louis and was just as angry after the game.
"These guys are a joke. How can people expect to take this game seriously when you have games like this?" Barrett said in the locker room after the game.
Now Barrett must face the consequences of this actions. League officials released this brief statement to the media: "We are regretful that Barrett has taken this to the level that it has reached. The league will not tolerate this type of conduct. Due to his actions during and after the game, the league is suspending him for 2 games."
So far in 2001, Barrett is batting .262 with 1 home run and 6 RBIs. | | Wednesday, May 2nd, 2001: Guerrero out 1-2 Weeks San Francisco fans will be disappointed to learn that Vladimir Guerrero developed a strained rib cage muscle while colliding with a player at a base in today's game. After the doctor informed the San Francisco Giants manager that Guerrero was expected to miss 1-2 weeks, the manager told the press that the rest of the team would have to step up their play until the right fielder could return. "You can't make excuses in baseball, because there's always a game tomorrow," said the team's skipper.
This season Guerrero is batting .324 with 15 RBIs, 19 runs scored and 6 home runs. | | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 33-36, .478 PCT | | Position in Division | 4th, 11.0 GB | | Record at home | 18-18, .500 PCT | | Record on the road | 15-18, .455 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 3-3, .500 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 6-8, .429 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 11-9, .550 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 22-27, .449 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 6-4, .600 PCT | | Record in April | 7-18, .280 PCT | | Record in May | 15-13, .536 PCT | | Record in June | 11-5, .688 PCT |
