| Breaking News | | Thursday, May 31st, 2001: Redsox Chill Catalanotto's Hot Streak The Boston Redsox pitching did its job today, holding hot-hitting Frank Catalanotto hitless in 3 at-bats during a 10-1 victory over the California Angels at The Big A. This disappointing performance ended his 27-game hitting streak.
"I'm a little down right now," Catalanotto told BNN after the game. "I couldn't get anything going when the team needed me and I hated to see the streak end, too."
In 55 games this season Catalanotto has batted at a .319 pace with 75 hits and 6 home runs. | | Sunday, May 20th, 2001: Olerud Belts Number 500 Boston first baseman John Olerud pounded a home run during the Redsox 3-2 loss to Minnesota yesterday. Despite the defeat the long ball was a significant achievement and raised his career home run total to 500.
"Some hitters never live up to the hype," said his manager. "John has definitely lived up to his. He's hammered the heck out of the ball year after year."
The Boston star went 1 hit for 1 at-bat during the game, scoring 2 runs and had 1 run batted in.
Olerud has a lifetime .273 average and .383 on-base percentage in his career with 1895 hits, 534 doubles, 19 triples, 500 home runs, 1376 RBIs and 1439 runs scored. | | Tuesday, May 15th, 2001: Senators Stop Mayne at 22 For 22 straight games, Brent Mayne tried to ignore his hitting streak. "But you guys in the media wouldn't let me." The 33-year-old Boston catcher can forget about it now -- it's over! -- courtesy of the Washington Senators. They held him hitless in 3 at-bats and snapped his consecutive-game hitting string at 22. The streak ended on one good note, however, Boston won the game, beating the Senators 10-8.
But Mayne acknowledged that it meant something to him. "It was special," he said, "but I think other people make a bigger deal out of it than I do, or the players do. But that's what you're supposed to do; go out and hit the ball and try and score runs. It was a cool deal. It's over now. Let's try to start it all over again."
Presently Mayne is batting .343 and has collected 2 home runs, 23 RBIs, .389 OBP and scored 17 runs. | | | Injuries | | Player | Injury | Out for... | Disabled List Status | | 2B Eddie Williams | fractured cheekbone | 5 months | On DL, eligible for return | | LF Bernie Williams | fractured skull | 5 months | On DL, eligible for return | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 32-38, .457 PCT | | Position in Division | 4th, 12.0 GB | | Record at home | 16-17, .485 PCT | | Record on the road | 16-21, .432 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 1-4, .200 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 5-14, .263 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 7-13, .350 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 25-25, .500 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 4-6, .400 PCT | | Record in April | 8-19, .296 PCT | | Record in May | 17-11, .607 PCT | | Record in June | 7-8, .467 PCT |
