| Breaking News | | Thursday, June 14th, 2001: Burnett Too Tough, Blanks Seattle A.j. Burnett of the Milwaukee Brewers really strutted his stuff on the mound today with a 18-0 victory. He was almost untouchable, bewildering the Seattle Mariners with a 5-hit shutout in which he struck out 7 and gave up 2 walks.
Checking out his stats for the year, Burnett has racked up 3 wins and 6 losses in 10 starts, 5.28 ERA and struck out 48 batters in 59.2 innings. | | Friday, May 4th, 2001: Alicea 5-6 for Minnesota "It was like I was hitting little league pitching," said Luis Alicea after his 5-hit performance against the Mariners. "No offense meant to Seattle, but it was like I was back in little league again. I could see the ball that well. But this wasn't a kid league park, it was Metropolitan Stadium."
The Minnesota second baseman had a fantastic day at the plate, knocking out 5 hits in 6 at-bats and pacing his club to a 12-11 victory.
His manager elaborated after the game to the press, saying, "Luis worked the entire offseason on trying to shorten his swing and stay inside the ball and the hard work is paying off in base hits."
"That's what I'm trying to do," Alicea said. "Be quick to the ball and let it travel a little farther so I get a better look at it."
L. Alicea singled in the 1st, flied out in the 2nd, doubled in the 5th, singled in the 6th, hit an RBI single in the 8th, walked in the 10th and hit a two-run home run off J. Smart in the 11th.
Alicea is hitting .309 this year with 7 home runs, 26 RBIs and 25 runs scored. He has 38 hits in 123 at-bats, 12 walks and a .372 on-base percentage. Alicea has played in 29 games. | | Monday, April 30th, 2001: Maes Week's #1 Player There's no arguing that 38-year-old Andreas Maes has paid his dues and this this week he collected.
